Hello! My name is Karla. I am a photographer + stylist + the creative mind / owner behind Tiklari.

I say I live in a constant creative mode. As I grew up in Mexico City, I was always involved in some kind of artistic activity – photography, baking, playing the piano, reading, drawing, writing. Naturally curious, I became appreciative of good food, colors, and the aesthetically beautiful.

Photography is my purest and most honest way of self-expression. I got my first camera when I was 6 (it was red + plastic) and I have been shooting ever since. I love simple, raw and natural moments. I believe there is immense beauty of creating something out of a moment that might have otherwise gone forgotten, or out of something that may be generally overlooked. Beauty is everywhere — even if we don't always see it.

I think of myself as some kind of nomad. At the age of 19, I lived Florence, Italy followed by Boston, L.A, Miami and finally I settled New York City in early 2012. I travel constantly and find inspiration in exploring new places, cultures, and markets. During my first trip to Istanbul in 2010, I found myself in awe of Turkey’s rich and colorful jewelry culture. Its vibrant colors and exotic markets inspired me to create Tiklari. Today, I collaborate with artisans in Turkey, mixing traditional jewelry-making techniques with special materials from around the world to create handcrafted jewelry with a happy soul. I take inspiration from my own photographic work to define Tiklari’s bold identity, selecting vivid colors to convey happiness while embracing eccentricity, free-spiritedness and beauty found in both Mexico and Turkey.
